In short: "Casino" comes from the Italian casino — "little house." The first public gambling house, Ridotto, opened in Venice in 1638. The format later spread to European resorts, and Monte Carlo (1865) became the symbol of the casino.

Where the name comes from: "little house"

"Casino" derives from the Italian casino — a diminutive of casa ("house," "cottage"). Literally, it means "little house" or "house for recreation." In the 15th–16th centuries in Italy, this was the name for country villas or gazebos where people gathered for social conversation, intellectual discussion, or relaxation. Only later did the meaning shift toward a place where gambling takes place.

Interestingly, in Venice "casino" could also mean a separate building on palace grounds — detached, with its own entrance, sometimes disguised so that outsiders would not suspect what was happening inside.

The world's first casino: Venice, 1638

Most historians agree that the first public, legal gambling house in Europe — Ridotto — opened in Venice in 1638. It was located in the Dandolo Palace, near the church of San Moisè.

The name Ridotto comes from the Italian ridurre — "to separate," "to make private." It was not just a hall with tables, but a kind of space where Venetians "gathered together" to gamble, socialize, and converse.

It is important to understand the motivation of the Venetian authorities. Gambling had flourished in the city for centuries, and bans did not work. So the Council of Ten decided not to fight gambling but to bring it under control: to permit gambling in one place in order to reduce chaos in the streets while filling the state treasury. Ridotto became the first example of what today would be called "legalization with regulation."

Interesting fact: visitors to Ridotto had to wear triangular hats and masks — this was not merely a nod to carnival tradition but also a way to preserve players' anonymity. Stakes were high, so in practice mostly aristocrats could play.

Spread across Europe: from resorts to Monte Carlo

In the 18th–19th centuries, casinos became part of resort culture. European spa towns built gaming halls as part of the entertainment for wealthy guests. But the true symbol of the "casino" emerged in Monaco.

Le Grand Casino de Monte Carlo opened in 1865 on the initiative of Prince Charles III, who needed money to fill the principality's budget. After several failed attempts to launch the gambling business, the concession was handed to the French entrepreneur François Blanc, who already had experience managing a casino in Bad Homburg. It was he who turned Monte Carlo into the world capital of gambling.

Incidentally, the name "Monte Carlo" appeared precisely because of the casino: the area around the gaming complex was renamed in honor of Prince Charles to make it more attractive to visitors.

Casinos in Ukraine: a brief overview

On Ukrainian lands, gambling was known as far back as Kyivan Rus, and in the 16th–17th centuries "gaming houses" began to appear in major cities. However, the first legal casino of independent Ukraine opened in early 1991 in the "Rus" hotel in Kyiv — in a basement room with 8 gaming tables and 8 slot machines. During 1992–1993, casinos appeared in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Donetsk, and Dnipropetrovsk.

What to remember from this

The casino began not with roulette or cards, but with a word. The Italian casino — "little house" — initially meant a place for relaxation and conversation, and only later became the name for a space where bets are placed. The first public gambling house in Venice was not merely an entertainment venue but an instrument of state control over something that could not be banned. And Monte Carlo proved that a casino can be not only a business but also the brand of an entire city.

That is why the history of the casino is not only about gambling, but also about how societies learned to regulate what they could not prohibit.
